First founded in 1364, the Jagiellonian University has been an integral part of Krakow's life for almost 650 years.
The University's importance on the international scene dates back to the 15th century when some 44% of the entire student population came from abroad! Today, with its growing curriculum and course lists offered in foreign languages, the Jagiellonian University is once again drawing an increasing number of the world's best students to its ancient halls and modern campus. Recognised worldwide, the Jagiellonian is a member of the European University Association, the Coimbra Group and the Utrecht Network.
The academic level of the University is indicated by the fact that almost every faculty has received category 1 (the highest) in the official rankings of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Junior academics and PhDs from the Jagiellonian annually receive over 10% of the prestigious grants awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science in recognition of the level of their scientific research. Academics from the University are effective in their competition for grants from European research programmes, and the University has several European Centres of Excellence.
The ancient Jagiellonian University, covered with the moss of centuries, is simultaneously a young and innovative place. A new, modern campus, called the Third Campus, between Zakrzówek and Pychowice, has been built just 4 km from the city centre.
With almost 46 000 students enrolled, 3657 academic teachers and almost 500 distinguished professors, JU provides 93 professionally focused course areas in the most notable fields.
Today, JU is recognised for
- Offering students a wide range of possibilities to develop academically, intellectually, and professionally;

- A long-standing commitment to the spread of knowledge in the most professional manner;
- High-quality and internationally renowned research;
